Cowboys & Aliens

What I expected going into the movie...

I was not expecting a masterpiece, I was thinking James Bond and Indiana Jones taking on the creature from Super 8 (a surprisingly good movie itself) without much more plot then that. Was hoping for just a decent popcorn/good fun movie.

What I discovered in the first 15 minutes

Clancy Brown, Adam Beach and Sam effing Rockwell were the supporting cast! Now I know most people are not the movie geek that I am and instantly know who these people are so here is a short reminder.

Clancy Brown - the Kurgan in Highlander, Captain Byron Hadley in The Shawshank Redemption, Career Sergeant Zim in Starship Troopers

Adam Beach - Kickin' Wing in Joe Dirt, Marine Private First Class Ira Hayes in Flags of Our Fathers, Private Ben Yahzee in Windtalkers, Dr. Charles Eastman (Ohiyesa) in Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee

Sam Rockwell -  The Green Mile, Iron Man 2, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Frost/Nixon, Galaxy Quest

No matter what movie you can not ask for a much better supporting cast.

Now Spoiler Free Review

I was incredibly surprised at how well this movie was put together with such a weak plot. Serious if there was any less talent in the movie, it would have fallen apart in a very short amount of time. Jon Favereau ends up directing a very fun movie. Disregard the weak main plot, Daniel Craig's character's own subplot is very intersting and captivating, which also ties into the main plot. The movies action was fun and fast paced, even Harrison Ford's age was not a detractor to the action.

The most impressive part of the movie is how incredibly complex and deep each of the main characters and the supporting ones I list above were!  Clancy Brown playing the typical western pastor who isn't all that typical. Adam Beach is a Native American ranch hand for Harrison Ford and Sam Rockwell is Doc the Saloon owner. The movie is a western first and foremost and focuses more on the character's reactions to the WTF moments supplied by the "demons".

Overall this was a fun movie I was glad to have seen it on the big screen, I even wished I would've spent the extra couple $$$ to have seen it in XD Extreme Digital rather then normal. As a bluray purchase its a maybe, however I will watch it multiple times on HBO or another premium channel or on Netflix streaming!

Go See it, its a fun summer popcorn movie.
