Character Background/Concept

Thok son of Koth, one of the Tree Brudders Haforc, is the last remaining heir of the Hairy Orc clan. Born of two pure half orcs, who he claims we children of half orcs themselves and proudly not related to each other. Considers himself to be the One Pure Half Orc. After narrowly escaping death as a child he was raised in Absalom in the Puddles district, with dreams of becoming a Pathfinder. While quite clever and full of guile his intelligence is not his strong suit and failed out of many trades schools, with the explosion at the bakery, he felt that the only thing left that he could earn a living was to become a scribe or bard!

Alas although dedicated and tried to self publish several manuscripts (most have been used as fine sheets of toilet paper, but one can still find a copy of 'See Thok Run' by Thok) he discovered that he discovered that he could carry a beat, so with the last of his money he purchased a hand drum and practiced by begging on the streets of Absalom. Several years of begging and practice had actually given Thok the skill to pass the entrance examine for a scholarship to Absalom's Bardic College. Still without clue on how to further his goal of becoming a Pathfinder he some how passed and graduated, this fact even amazed his instructors. After leaving and going to the Grand Lodge, he was rejected from becoming a Pathfinder. One does not become a Pathfinder by knocking on the door and saying "LIke my drum me wanna be a pathfinder" he traveled north to the land of Linnorm Kings to learn more of becoming a Skald of legend before reapplying to the Grand Lodge.

His chant of stealth still needs work...

Hello Friends,
Before I get to the events of the home game last Saturday. I came across I very well done article on the D&D boards (was directed from ENWorld) entitled Behind Every Good GM

The quote I am going to take from the Part 1 is...

"Behind every good DM are good players. I've seen good DMs run games for bad players, at least until the paralysis sets in or until they're reduced to shambling wrecks. Bad players are DM kryptonite. That said, I recommend that every DM endure at least one horrendous player experience to remind him or her of the value of great players, of which I probably have more than my fair share."

An experienced D&D player who's more about the roleplaying than the rules. 378 22.0%
An experienced, easy-going player who also likes to DM occasionally. 321 18.7%

Event Description

Vegas Game Day is a free, monthly "mini-con", which brings together the local gaming community to play and teach old school, "analog" social games like roleplaying games, board games, card games, and tactical miniatures. Find local groups looking for players or meet new players for your home games! There are organized and scheduled games in addition to open tables for pick-up games.

What to Expect

Take a look at some of the fun in store for you at Vegas Game Day!
  • Pathfinder Society (Pathfinder D&D 3.5)
  • Living Forgotten Realms (D&D 4.0)
  • ShadowRun Missions
  • Independent/Story Games
  • Board Games (Settlers of Catan, Carcassone & much more.)
In addition to scheduled events, we always have several open tables setup for pick-up games. We also offer the Indy Games Carnival, which runs in a “pick-up game” style where interested players can get quick demos of games they are interested in or sit down with several players and play a full adventure. It’s a great opportunity to play a game you never heard of or have always wanted to try out!
From the latest Euro board game, to collectible and non-collectible card games, to traditional favorites. We always have open tables that can facilitate various board and card games.

Meet Local Gamers

Not only is Vegas Game Day a great place to play games but you can mix it up and get to know your local gamers! Come out and find opportunities for regular games, events, and social gatherings. Find new players for your game. It's nice to meet face to face and play a game or two to see how people fit together!
Currently scheduled or slotted games are organized via Warhorn, a game scheduling website. You must sign up and create an account on Warhorn to reserve a seat in a game.
If you are interested in running a game, please PM Stevebob or Perry Snow and we'll get you on the schedule!

Now I have not been to the new location, but I hear its a heck of a lot better then the old expect for limited parking. However it is downtown Vegas, so parking sucks from the start.I have a lot of hope for it and also Saturday before the new start time, is a meeting for all Neoncon Volunteers. I plan on going without really knowing what its going to entails, however one of my fellow home gamers and SRM/PFS player Chris has some ideas he will be presenting.

Now that most of the home game group has probably scrolled through to this point time to recap the latest in Trial of the Beast.

The party was shorthanded this week with Quick Breakwind (Yes that is his new name after befriending a Wyvern) and the mysterious Olin watching the horses outside of Schloss Caromarc. Judge Daramid had them travel to here after the Beast to ensure his protection and to contact his mysterious Creator.
Upon Arriving the remaining four Huntress, Paithen, Seska and Mouse were set upon at the gatehouse by a pair of trollhounds guarding the entrance.  Shortly after the combat started, Huntress dropped one with a single shot from her bow and Mouse charged the other trollhound. Before the rest could act they were beset two very large trolls from the gate and 3 goblins raining arrows down upon them. The party defeated the foes but no with some injury as Seska lost the ring finger on his left hand due to a vicous attack by a trollhound.
The goblin slaves of the troll fled when the 2 were defeated leaving behind an amulet they stole from the Whispering Way.
on the way to the mansion there was the troll leader another troll and trollhound which were in a well fought and challenging fight where huntress and Paithen nearly lost their lives. Due to Huntress finding an old guards tunic the unseen servants and traps in the manse didn't effect the party at all and provided warm clothes. However in the alchemy lab they we ambushed but several rust monsters, which caused Seska to flee in terror.
We left off at the rope bridge where our noble adventurers narrowly defeated the Ernieyes that were Summon Monster VI trap summoned.

It was a very bloody night and they barely survived intact, but on the plus side the loot was really good.

Next moment of Idleness shall have the Game Day and next home game updates!

Catching Up

Whew Holidays and just November can just be hectic, so I am bowing out of the dreaded Black Friday this year and volunteered to work a few hours at the office.

Wow there is a lot I need to cover since my last blog.

Lets start off with Neoncon. I really enjoyed myself and I know quite a few others did too.

Neoncon Day 1

Showed to play in a Pathfinder Society game, Frostfur Captives, being run by Marty Weil. I was apprehensive at first since I was playing a character I created just for the convention (a gunslinger) and also Marty has had a reputation for being a little argumentative, railroading, and condescending of other people's characters. I was pleasantly surprised! He made those annoying little goblins very interesting and no one walked away complaining. Not saying that it was the Game of the Con or anything like that but definitely I did not regret playing.
After the PFS we had a break and I chatted with several people, finally got set up for the Shadowrun Convention Mission, Moving Day to play. It went FANTASTIC, the group got along well, JP really shined as Ralph the Troll Hobo Shaman who has a really nice box down by the river. I can honestly say everyone walked away content, had some older players and some I'd never played with before so it was a good mix.

Neoncon Day 2
It was Friday, I was to play NeoExodus (Very Fun, Loads of return Hate to the Creator what's his name?) then run a PFS game that was changed a couple of days ahead of time, but still went well. Then I ran Shadowrun Convention Mission - Ancient Pawns. This mission has been by far my favorite that I have ran out of the 6 I've done so far. The party was well constructed and worked well together even when the best laid plans have to be scrapped within the first round of combat. It was well paced and even though they didn't get to complete everything they wanted to, the party was still extremely successful in accomplishing the mission at hand.

Neoncon Day 3
Saturday, Con fatigue was starting in on me, however I had purposely scheduled the afternoon session as a break to spend with the Wife and then a short nap before the PFS Interactive Blood under Absalom, which I still hadn't been told if I was running or not. The morning slot I played my gunslinger again with a very talented GM, unfortunately I do not recall his real name but he goes by Czrenobog on the Paizo forums. We played Exiles of Winter which was a simple game with more @#%*ing goblins. I am really starting to dislike the little buggers..
Took lunch with the Wife, went to Greek restaurant where I had a pretty good chicken kabob and the Wife enjoyed her Gyro.
Quick nap then back to the con for evening session. Had a bowl of Hot and Sour soup with JP, the half packet of soy sauce really did improve it thanks again!
So long story short about the PFS Interactive... it wasn't interactive, every player at my table enjoyed themselves until the finale. I missed Year of the Shadowlodge the Year before and now regret that even more with this years really sucking the ye ol' hind tit. I don't think it was ever play tested and was poorly written. It ran late and I had an early game the next morning.

Neoncon Day 4
Yay for Daylight Savings Time! Got a much needed extra hour of sleep before running Shadowrun Convention Mission - Ashes. Had some last minute player changes but it was a solid game with solid players.
I then spent the afternoon playing some Blood Bowl Team Manager (awesome game itself)

Convention Recap

Solid Convention, I will be there next year. I think I might pass on Pathfinder and run more Shadowrun since there seemed to be an awful lot of interest and inquiries. I do think there was a lack of advertising and if some was done we would have had a larger crowd. Everyone should make sure they have a belt, damn you Chris for pointing that guy out grrr.

Las Vegas Game Day 11/12/11

Was a lite day, but then again I expected that with the Convention having been the week before. I of course ran a Shadowrun Mission which we had 2 open seats but the party more then made up for the lack. In the afternoon slot I played more Bloodbowl and then another card game which I can't recall the name right now.

Home Game Fun

Tough to talk about without spoilers. The Beast has been found Innocent of all charges and now the players are headed to confront the Beast's creator. Schloss Caromarc is the name of the location he is dwelling and they should complete the module in the Next session on Dec 3rd. Only thing keeping them from that would be a TPK, but that isn't possible with at least one person going to be absent, the new party can be rebuilt around him....Gosh I can be evil since I know they read this :) But definitely we will be in Broken Moon before the New Year.

Happy Holidays

Shadowrun, Game Day, Conventions, Pathfinder and more!

Hello My Friends!

Wow what a couple of weeks its been, whew time to take a breath and relate some of it.

Home Game:

Started Book 2 of the Carrion Crown AP Trial of the Beast. Our noble party divided up and sent half of the group ahead to scout (actually had a couple of people absent) and ran into a few minor problems in their travels along the road to Liepstadt, some assassin vine, and a wyvern! The battle with the wyvern was quite pitched and well fought, the grappling monk Quick Like a Tree getting the upper hand and forcing the wyvern to submit after the additional damage done by Olin the Magus and Avik the Wizard/Cleric. Shortly there after they met up with the Crooked Kin, a traveling freak show hurrying to make to the trial when one of the members of their troupe went missing. The adventurers immediately without hesitation began tracking the missing pinhead (she was a freak) into the swamp when they were ambushed by the same phase spider that killed the missing pinhead. In a noble effort Avik fell in battle to save the group by enabling Olin to land a killing blow.

We chose to break at this point to continue with more of the party and to mourn the one player's second death in two sessions.

Shadowrun:

I am the new Shadowrun Field Agent for Shadowrun Missions Organized play! SO Vegas look out for more missions and demos to be played around town!.

Conventions:

Neoncon is just around the corner with some exciting stuff happening. First of all I have to give a shout out to JP who will be attending, will discuss the NeoExodus Campaign Setting for Pathfinder RPG. There is also a New World of Darkness game that stretches through out the convention. In addition to the big 2 Organized Play Games (Pathfinder Society and Living Forgotten Realms) I will be running several slots of Shadowrun Missions which I believe is making its Neoncon debut as well.

Las Vegas Game Day:

I began the SRM (Shadowrun Missions) with SRM 04-00 Back in Business which is the beginning of the current season taking place in Seattle. I ended up with a full table of 7 players and had been told by 4 others via twitter and email that they would attend the next one. I think I can chalk this up as a success. There was one death and most unfortunate it was the same player from my home that died. This made it 3 sessions of gaming with 3 deaths.

Chris it's not personal! Don't take it to hard!

Everyone seemed to really enjoy it as much as I did! So next month I put up another signature list for the 2nd Mission in SRM 04-01 Hiding in the Dark.

I hope to see everyone at the convention and at Game Day!

Haunting of Harrowstone Completed! And other stuff

Hello My Friends

SPOILERS LURKING

Finished the first module of the Carrion Crown, Haunting of Harrowstone on Saturday. We were one person short due to family emergency and against the feared Splatter Man, our LG Synthesis Summoner Ananti, was the victim of 2 magic missile volleys from a level 8 wizard/Ghost followed up by 4 successful Corrupting touches 6d6 each. With two clerics in the group it was a sturggle to keep him alive in this epic combat. Our brave yet foolhardy monk, Quick like a Tree, failed his acrobatics to avoid and opportunity attack from the Splatter Man and was knocked unconscious with one strike of the Corrupting Touch. Huntress brought the pain and Seska and Olin were valiant and attentive in their support roles.

After Splatter Man, they ran into the Lopper, who couldn't quit get going with the clerics stopping his bleed effects. His bleed effects healing him and with his incorporeal nature make him worth the CR 5. The fight went quickly.

Had to break for a short while to let the dogs outside.

Finally the Mosswater Marauder was not even a bump in the steaming rolling vengeance of the party. Having cleared the haunts and the party was able to continue to finish the remainder of the time helping Kendra finish tending to business before their anticipated journey to Liepstadt to deliver the Professor's book collection.

END SPOILERS

Opinion

This module well deserves the awards and acclaim it has received. I am a veteran GM of modules and scenario games, and this was definitely a good one and recommend it to everyone. It makes good use of the haunt system introduced in the Game Master's guide and the over all vibe the party gave was of intense interest in several of the mysteries and the eerie presence invoked by the module.  We have a Google Group we use to communicate in between games since we only play every other week and it blows up after each game session with inter-party discussions and debates every GM dreams of seeing.

Other News

This October 8th, I am not going to be participating in PFS, not leaving it or quitting it just wanting to add more flavor and options to Game Day. So therefore, I am starting to run Shadowrun Missions.  I have also scheduled to run Shadowrun's Convention Only missions at Neoncon.  I will be running 2 table of SRM (Shadowrun Missions) and two tables of PFS. Also at Neoncon I will be competing in the Iron GM tournament in an attempt to get to GenCon. Well that's not the only, the rest to to inflate my ego :) I do hope to get a chance to check out my friend JPs NeoExodus and recommend all me readers to as well. Previews and such can be found at http://jpchapleau.blogspot.com.

Thank you for your time

Lessons Learned

Hello Again

Its been awhile since my last blog, but that was somewhat intentional. One of things I have discovered is that my group reads my blog, so I am going to have to take more care in recaps from the game. I had accidentally dropped a name that they had completely forgotten (Gibs), who's rolled while minor, lead to some pretty hefty conclusions and speed them through the module at a faster pace. On of the party members decided to track him and was attacked by Gibbs, Gibbs being CR2 nearly won. The party came to the conclusion that he might have been possessed and visited Father Grimburrow. While there they manage to do some more research and have now feeling confident in attacking the prison itself.

The part elected to go through the proverbial backdoor and up the tower and encountered a Halfling size Strige, which was quickly dispatched and discovered the secret entrance to the upper level of the prison and then almost immediately set off the Piper of Illmarsh's haunt. Quickly the noble heroes realized that they couldn't defeat it right off the bat and realized they had forgotten the Haunt Siphons they found at the very beginning. So All of the party except one go back the way they came and the LG Summoner of group decided to go through the balcony, quickly discovering and Animated Scythe and beat feet back to the main group. The came back and ended up using half of their Siphons defeating the haunt and could not defeat the Scythe.
This is where we left of with the 2nd floor clear except for the scythe of awesomeness....

Headsman’s Scythe CR 2
XP 600
Animated object (see page 80)
N Small construct
Init +1; Senses darkvision 60 ft., low-light vision; Perception –5
Defense
AC 18, touch 12, flat-footed 17 (+1 Dex, +6 natural, +1 size)
hp 21 (2d10+10)
Fort +0, Ref +1, Will –5
Defensive Abilities hardness 10; Immune construct traits
Weaknesses haunted
Offense
Speed 30 ft.
Melee scythe +3 (2d4/×4)
Statistics
Str 10, Dex 12, Con —, Int —, Wis 1, Cha 1
Base Atk +2; CMB +1; CMD 12
SQ construction points (haunted, metal)

This was also a very interesting combat at first thanks to Quick Like Tree, being a grapple specialist monk from Ultimate Combat. Trying his best to grapple and pin a scythe.

Ultimately it was the hardness that deflected the party's attempts. Now I am not giving anything up by posting information on the mob, just for others to see what a party of six had problems with, also I may or may not decided to have it still locked out on the balcony where they left it...

Tomorrow

Tomorrow happens to be our monthly Vegas Game! I plan on running Citadel of Flame in the morning slot! Now I am bringing my camera to take pictures of everything. But again another lesson has been learned this week is that prepping to run a home game AP and a PFS scenario can be a challenge, at least i have an additional week for the home game.

Summary
here are the main lessons learned

1. Don't give meta game information in a blog that players read and remind you that you have not done one in a while.

2. Remember to take items designed for dealing with haunts into a haunted prison. (Just Saying)

3. Don't try to take on a lot of gaming work at once.
